Avignon

If you have time on your hands Avignon is a great place to base yourself  and explore the surrounding countryside. Once in Avignon, you won't want to leave. The town is too interesting to let you go. Avignon is ancient, full of history, life, youth, art, music and activity. Just to "see" the town itself, you could wander the narrow streets inside the fortified walls for days without tiring of them.

In the 14th century, Avignon was the capital of Christendom -- the popes lived here instead of Rome. The legacy left by their "court of splendour and magnificence" makes Avignon one of the most interesting and beautiful of Europe's medieval cities.

Today this walled city of some 100,000 residents reaches its peak celebration time during the famous Festival d'Avignon, a 3-week plethora of music, art, and theatre. Avignon at any time of the year is a major stopover. It has become well known as a cultural center. Artists and painters in increasing numbers have been moving here. Experimental theatres, painting galleries, and art cinemas have brought diversity to the inner city, especially Rue des Teinturiers.

Take your time wandering about the streets of Avignon, The ancient streets, the courtyards of the private mansions, the renovated facades will all charm you! One of the most elegant streets is the Rue Joseph Vernet, adjacent to the Calvet museum and the Requien Museum. Tourists can still visit the massive Palais des Popes, which resembles a medieval fortress-castle.
Don't miss the Antiquaire quarter, the Place de l'Horloge or the Chemin de Ronde, which will take you to the Rocher des Doms. From the top of the ramparts you can understand why the site was chosen for a fort. The views are not just stunning – they are sublime!
