Marseille

Located in south-eastern France on the Mediterranean Sea, Marseille has evolved over the course of its 2,500-year history to become France’s second largest city with a metropolitan area exceeding 1,200,000. As the leading commercial port on the Mediterranean, the city’s economy is anchored by trade. Although possessing a rich history that dates back to ancient Greece, Marseille is a modern, cosmopolitan city that offers exciting nightclubs, fabulous restaurants, a variety of theatres, an international soccer stadium, and more than twenty museums.

The flavour of Marseilles is antiquity, seaport, seafood, museums, history and travel. Bustling Marseille, with more than a million inhabitants, is the second-largest city in France , and France's premier port. It's been called France's New Orleans. A crossroads of world traffic -- Dumas called it "the meeting place of the entire world". Marseille is a place of unique sounds, smells, and sights.

Although in many respects Marseille is big and sprawling, there's much elegance and charm here as well. It has  a dynamic downtown, big parks, a medieval-village-style neighbourhood, super shopping and wonderful seafood .The heart of the city is Vieux Port, the old harbour, is especially interesting and colourful. Popular tourist sites include the old quarter of Panier, Palaise de Longchamp, the Cathedral of the Major, the ruins of Jardin, and the 19th-century Notre Dame de la Garde. The city is also experiencing somewhat of a renaissance. Since the 1970s, a great deal of the economy has revolved around thousands upon thousands of North and sub-Saharan Africans who have poured into Marseille, creating a lively melting pot of races and cultures. A quarter of the present population of Marseille is of North African descent. These Africans have flocked here in the hope of finding a better life for themselves.

Marseilles must be the seafood capital of Provence, if not all of France!. The most famous seafood dish of Marseilles is bouillabaisse, world renowned and well deserving of its reputation The two main varieties offered in local restaurants are Bouillabaisse du Ravi and Bouillabaisse du Pêcheur. "Ravi", the most complete and including six different types of fish, is definitely a complete meal. Bouillabaisse du Pêcher is smaller and lighter, with three types of fish. This is the recommended choice for lunch. Several excellent seafood restaurants surround the Old Port, and others also line the   narrow walking streets beside the Quai de Rive Neuve
